My passion for wine started in college, where I had a part time job working in a wine shop. I wanted to be able to assist customers and grow the business, so I took it upon myself to start my own personal studies of wine, liquor, and beer. I was ultimately hooked into the history, the culture, and the passion that comes with the industry. While I have spent nearly 20 years continuing to learn and study all things wine, I don’t have any official sommelier certifications to my name. Because of this, it is always my goal to make wine approachable to everyone I talk to throughout my professional career. When I started Eataly Boston’s wine club in 2017, one of the main ideologies was to try and make high quality Italian wine affordable and approachable for someone who was just getting into it, but also fun and in-depth enough for someone who has been surrounded by it for years.
I get this question all the time, and the honest answer is that it’s impossible to pick. Wine to me is all about the occasion, what you’re eating with it, what the weather is like, where you are, and most importantly — who you are with. The shortest answer is that my favorite wines are Italian wines. The culture, the history, and the amount of variety all from one country make Italian wines truly special.
Again, it all depends on the occasion, which is what we aim to showcase with the Eataly Boston wine club — whether it’s showing off the wines of Emilia-Romagna from its sanguine Sangiovese to its deep Lambrusco, to how these wines highlight the region’s handmade pastas, cured meats, and hearty foods. Or, to the elegant foods rooted in the region of Piemonte, where truffles and delicately refined dishes are paired with the aromatic wines of Nebbiolo and where the “king” of wines, Barolo, is the showcase of the region.
Finding the “right” glass to enjoy your wine all comes down to personal preference. At the end of the day, it does make all the difference. Personally, I almost always prefer an all-purpose glass as opposed to the deep, bulbous red wine glasses you see. However, once again, what’s most important is the occasion.
Yes and no – all that matters is that you’re enjoying the experience. When diving into the complexities of tasting wine, it’s important to take your time and take in the little details: study the color, focus on the aromas of the fruit and the secondary, tertiary aromas. Remember that your smell is 90% of your taste. When you sip your wine, try your best not to just sling it back. Notice the acidity, tannin, body, and texture. Also, always make sure whoever you’re with doesn’t have an empty glass!
